A Call for Volunteers
and Thoughtful Citizens
- A clean and beautiful
city depends on the
pride of residents,
businesses, property
owners and youth.
- A
clean city also makes
good business sense and
results in a healthy
economy.
- A
clean and
beautiful cities attract
highly skilled workers
and investment, and
enable us to live, work
and play in well
maintained, safe and
pleasant surrounding.
In municipalities across
the province, litter is
moving out of the
ditches and into the
spotlight. We are
hearing an increasingly
clear message from
citizens and businesses
that litter is
incompatible with civic
pride, duty and
prosperity. The quality
of public space matters
to everyone.
Some people will say
that we benefit from
synthetic materials,
such as plastics,
because of their
durability, low cost,
and light weight.
Unfortunately, these
same properties pose
problems for the
environment. Being
extremely stable, they
do not readily break
down but tend to remain
in the environment for
many years. Each year,
more debris is released
into the environment and
as time goes on the
amount of debris in the
environment increases
and is both harmful to
both wildlife and
people.
The best way to educate
the public about this
serious environmental
problem is to start with
people you know. If
someone you know
litters, question them
on it and tell them it
affects all of our
personal and public
spaces as well as the
environment. And let us
all take civic pride in
our beautiful community
of Mission, join the
District of Mission
staff and the Mission
Adopt-A-Block Society in
revitalizing unsightly
neglected and littered
spaces, both urban and
green spaces, and help
pick up litter as you
walk down the street,
visit city neighborhoods
and parks.

Finally, let us all
try to do the following:
-
Smokers: put your
butts in the ashtray
and cigarette packs
in the bin.
-
Recycle all beverage
containers to
receive a
reimbursement of
your deposit
-
We all drink coffee
on the go - make
sure your cup ends
up in the bin.
-
Recycle all
newspapers and other
paper products.
-
Place your chewing
gum in the bin, not
on the sidewalk
-
Wait until you get
home to dispose of
your fast food
packaging
-
Pledge to pick up
one piece of litter
daily.
-
Remind family,
friends, kids and
colleagues not to
litter.
-
Get involved in a
community
anti-litter program
or large group
clean-up.

How Can You Become a
Volunteer?
Whether it’s you or your
family, your community
group, your school or
your co-workers, signing
up to volunteer for
Mission Adopt-A-Block is
simple. First, give us a
call at
(604) 826-9423
and arrange to come down
to the office to
register as a volunteer,
decide on the area you’d
like to adopt, and we’ll
set you up with the
equipment you’ll need to
get you started (litter
picker, bag, vest). Then
after an important
safety talk on litter
handling you’ll be all
set to go to contribute
to the health and safety
of the Mission community
by joining in our
anti-litter campaign.
The Mission
Adopt-A-Block would not
exist without the
dedication and
perseverance of a good
number of volunteers. It
takes special people to
commit to the difficult
and not-so-pretty task
of litter clean-up so
that the rest of the
community and the
environment can benefit.
