Earth Day

“On Earth Day, April 22, 2006 The Mission Adopt-A-Block Society and Communities in Bloom organized a joint Earth Day by cleaning up over 400kg of litter, and arranging to have a beautiful cherry tree planted in Mission’s Centennial Park.

Several community groups and individual volunteers showed up and made great strides in cleaning up major garbage/litter dump sites around the leisure center, the ravine beside Mission Central School, Kinsmen Park and surrounding walking paths. Upon the completion of the litter clean-up, Mayor James Atebe came to attend the tree planting ceremony and to add to the show of civic pride. Donuts, coffee and juice were generously supplied by our local Tim Horton’s in support of this special event.”

Celebration of Community

In 2005, Enviro Girl and the Litter Bug were seen roaming around the vicinity and later put on a dramatic presentation as Enviro Girl battled the nuisance Litter Bug from dropping tons of litter in Mission with his secret satellite magnet device. In 2006, thanks to the donations made by numerous community members and businesses, Mission Adopt-A-Block was please to raise money to aid on–going anti-litter efforts, by hosting a silent auction.

In 2007, Mission Adopt-A-Block hosted a “Community Barrel Painting Contest” where community organizations added their special creative touch to decorate new garbage barrels to replace the old in Mission Sports Park.

Fraser Valley Bald Eagle Festival

This past year, Mission Adopt-A-Block hosted a community mural painting event and an ‘Auntie Litter’ story time, at the Mission Recycling-District of Mission FVDEF day event, held on Saturday November 25, 2006, at the Mission Recycling center. Mission Adopt-A-Block thanks Fraser Valley Building Supplies, which donated the wood required to paint the large mural that conveys an anti-litter theme and is on display at the Mission Recycling center.

Annual Elementary Poster Competitions

Last year’s Poster Competition 2005-2006 message emphasized the theme “Keep Mission Clean”. Mission Adopt-A-Block congratulated the winners of the 2005-2006 First Annual Poster Competition, the grade 5 and 6 students of Hillside Elementary, whom contributed their fabulous art work to promote Mission Adopt-A-Block’s campaign to “Keep Mission Litter Free”. First place posters were displayed in the community, in recognition of the student’s hard work and to help promote environmental awareness and support for Adopt-A-Block’s on going environment & education programs.
